I am a photographer/artist currently living on the south coast of England.
Scanning has been an intermittent but on going exploration for me ever since 2008. I became inspired after seeing some scanner art at a couple of exhibitions. I was enchanted by the surreal but intimate nature of the images.
What I love about scanning is how it isolates the subject with its shallow depth of field and lighting, making it seem as if it appears from out of nowhere. It is this ethereal effect that scanning can produce which attracts me.
I have experimented mostly with flowers so far, but have also used the media as a way to visually implement a concept by setting it out on the scanner bed, as with ‘How does your garden grow?’ (please refer to website) whereby the scanner bed becomes a cross section of earth.
It seems the artistic possibilities of scanning are endless, especially with editing software. And of course there is always the classic bum Xerox!
