Crystal balls, mirrors (convex, concave and black),
and darkness. Optical tools of divination.
John's statement
I created the artworks presented here with a scanner and a glass marble. In a relatively dark room, I scan a marble at 4800 dpi. I crop images from the resulting raw scan. I do not edit them in any way. In some cases, I have selected over 30 images like those shown here from a single scan. Some might see these as abstract art. But to me they contain representational elements. Within these images, I see inconspicuous images of beings, objects and scenes, especially when I view them in a dark room. How one explains this phenomenon depends upon one's beliefs.
Skeptics have invented a word for it. They would say I am experiencing "pareidolia". I have written an essay about my take on that notion (see: Pareidolia: A Vacuous Concept). I can only speculate as to why one may see such inconspicuous images. Perhaps they were created by spirit artists who work in the medium of light. Or maybe they are the product of imagination. Either way, I find these images to be fascinating. Perhaps you will as well.
